Method

  1. To make the crumble topping, sift the flours into a bowl, then tip in any bran from the sieve.
  2. Stir in the sugar and oatmeal, then work the butter, using your fingertips, to make a very crumbly mixture.
  3. Peel and quarter the apples then cut into 2.5cm (1 inch) chunks.
  4. Melt the butter in a large frying pan and add the apples and sugar and cook, stirring over a high heat, for 3-5 minutes until golden brown and tender.
  5. Transfer into a large pie dish and scatter the brambles on top.
  6. Spoon on the crumble and bake at 190C or Gas Mark 5 for 25 minutes until the topping is golden brown.
  7. Serve with custard and/or ice-cream.
