Apple Crumble

Ingredients
Crumble
- 50g (2oz) plain white flour
 - 25g (1oz) plain wholemeal flour
 - 75g (3oz) soft brown sugar
 - 50g (2oz) oatmeal
 - 50g (2oz) unsalted butter
 
Filling
- 700g (1.5lb) eating apples
 - 50g (2oz) unsalted butter
 - 50g (2oz) caster sugar
 - 225g (8oz) brambles (optional)
 
Method
- To make the crumble topping, sift the flours into a bowl, then tip in any bran from the sieve.
 - Stir in the sugar and oatmeal, then work the butter, using your fingertips, to make a very crumbly mixture.
 - Peel and quarter the apples then cut into 2.5cm (1 inch) chunks.
 - Melt the butter in a large frying pan and add the apples and sugar and cook, stirring over a high heat, for 3-5 minutes until golden brown and tender.
 - Transfer into a large pie dish and scatter the brambles on top.
 - Spoon on the crumble and bake at 190C or Gas Mark 5 for 25 minutes until the topping is golden brown.
 - Serve with custard and/or ice-cream.
